how do I find out the manufacturer of my CDRW drive?

I'm trying to find out if there are updated drivers available, as I seem to
get a lot of fixation errors when burning (using WinXP Home, and Nero 5.5,
with Imation discs).

I'm wondering if there is any freeware/shareware out there that will show me
the brand/maker of my installed CDR and CDRW drives?

Any help is appreciated,

Device Manager doesn't show a brand name in the CD/DVD-ROM device
listing? I have a Lite-On CD-RW and a Toshiba DVD-ROM and both are
listed in Device Manager with the manufacturer's name in the device
listings for them.

Device manager may tell you, but not always, some CD writers are OEM
unbranded, Nero may also be able to tell you, find something in the
menus called CD info or somthing like that.

If the frive is having problems with a certain brand or type of CD, then
it could be a Firmware problem more than drivers. How old is the writer
and what speed is it?

I presume you fliped the lid on the computer case and had a look on the
drive label?

CD writers are so cheap now, sometimes it is better to buy a new one anyway.

There is a useful utility called discinfo. This can be d/loaded from
http://forum.firmware-flash.com/dl_utility.php there a few other useful utils too.

No, all I have showing in Device Mgr is the generic Windows drivers,
and it's just labelled "CD Writer"

So far I haven't opened the case (laziness!), 'cause I've got to move
a LOT of stuff out of the way from the desk to get to it. The PC have
plenty of air space behind it, but it's not easy to get to. That's one
reason I was looking for a software solution!
