CDRW/DVD drive issues

I'm running Windows XP home edition, and have a TEAC DW-224E combination CDRW/DVD drive. When trying to burn a CD it stopped working, and now will read DVDs but cannot read any form of CD, CDR or CDRW. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, and it's already set to DMA rather than PIO. Any suggestions?

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.

Or try this:

Select 'Windows Utilities' and scroll down to 'Restore CD/DVD drives to
Windows Explorer.'
Perhaps his utility will do the trick. =)

Nope, still not working. The CD spins in the drive for a while but it can't seem to read it or even register that there's a CD in there. DVDs will work fine, though. Thanks anyway Shenan

Are you using any third party Burner software?

Hi,
I just had a problem I could not solve on my own.
I asked for support from Microsoft and within less then 24 hours they e-mailed a procedure which
solved my problem (XP was not recognizing my cd writer).
To get the support go to START>CONTROL PANEL>HELP AND SUPPORT CENTRE>
GET SUPPORT>GET HELP FROM MICROSOFT
You will have to get .net passport to get this help. Prompts will direct you.
Best of luck, Adam

AdamW,

How about sharing the problem and solution you were given instead of JUST
touting how you solved the issue. My bet is that your issue must have
centered around the CD/DVD issues people have seen and solved in the past on
these newsgroups through various methods - what was the method sent to you
by Microsoft?

Here are two takes on the same procedur

I found this procedure in one of the answers to a question
What to do if CD Writer is not recognized by Windows XP

When you loaded XP, Easy CD Creator (or likeness) was on

The BIOS sees the drive fine
It is not present in device manager
If you load a new driver, you cannot
If you load new software, no difference
Yes to these means Filters
First, uninstall any burning software on the system
Reboot as required

Go to star
ru
type regedit, then OK, to open the registry edito

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHIN
Expand SYSTE
Expand CurrentControlSe
Expand Contro
Expand Clas
Find and highlight: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

Save it
With the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}key still

Upper Filter
Delete the Upper Filter
Look for Lower Filters as well
Delete that too
Close the Registry Editor, and restart the machine

Ah - Okay - yes - I have suggested that many times on this newsgroup. It is
excellent advice!

Thanks for posting it here - hopefully someone doing a search will find both
your Microsoft contact advice as well as this method to fix the CD/DVD
issues if needed!
