CDRW drive

I have a CDRW drive, and, when I stick a CDRW in it, Windows tells me
there is no disc in it.

I'm using the default XP CDROM driver, and I can write to CDRs.

Any ideas why CDRWs work?

I think it might be a driver issue, but I don't remember what type of
drive I have. So, I don't really know how to check for drivers unless
I can figure out the manufacturer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

you can pop open
your pc and check the
labels on cd device....

or look up the model
of the pc at its parent
website and check out
faq's, downloads, patches,
etc..

Are the cdrw media you are using used with files already on them or brand
new?

Windows XP has more support for CD-RW drives than earlier versions of
Windows, but it does NOT include packet writing. It includes "mastering"
software, where you collect copies of all the files you want to write to a
"holding area" on your hard disk, and then you've collected everything the
whole collection is written at once. You cannot write file by file, which is
what packet writing supports ( Using the CDRW as a Floppy disk ). All the
popular third party software for CD-RW drives, such as Easy CD Creator and
Nero Burning ROM, have versions which supply packet writing for Windows XP

Look in Device Manager under the CD/DVD section. It should list the
make/model of the drive.

It's a drive I bought from Circuit City and installed myself about a
year ago.

I opened the PC, and the drive doesn't say who the manufacturer is.

Windows Device Manager just says ATAPI CD-RW 52XMax.

I tried two different types of CD-RWs, and neither worked.

I'm beginning to think the CD-RW functionality may just be broken on
the drive. Do you usually even need manufacturer provided drivers for
CD-ROM drives?
