Cdrw doesnt recognize disks

my cdrw drive on windows XP does not recognize disks. After a blank disk is
inserted it says to insert a disk and the drawer opens. I checked the status
of the drive in the device manager but it says it is working properly. The
drive will not even play a CdROM. Its like it doesnt know when there is a
disk in there. Please help!!
