Well, as the 'family' computer expert, I've gotten stuck with my sisters XP
Home machine. She has so much spy ware and adware on the thing it is just
going bizerk. The most bizarre thing is that the CDROM drive goes in and out
continously.

My thought has been to just start over, forget about spybot etc and format
the thing so I could get started off correctly, but of course I can't put
the CD in to do an install the way its working.

Has anyone seen this kind of problem where the CDROM goes in and out
continously? I thought I might just fdisk with a floppy and then boot from
the new CD and do it that way but I'm not sure whats going on with the
CDROM.

Thanks.

If it's a hardware problem, reinstalling the software isn't going to fix
that particular problem. On the other hand, if it's spyware and you're
really commited to formatting and reinstalling, the easy thing to do is boot
from the CD. If you do that, nothing on the hard drive has loaded, so it
shouldn't be popping in and out. then you can format the drive, delete
partitions, whatever you want to do.

If you can't keep the CD from popping in and out while you're booting, then
it's a hardware problem, along with the spyware.

Sounds like the CD eject button is stuck. How much coke did she spill on
the cup holder tray.

That'll be $10 please.

Mine did the same a few weeks back and as previously stated if it does this
during the boot get another one. Do check your button for stuck also.

I've seen this phenomenom many times, and I've always been able to fix
it by replacing the defective CD drive.

Help us help you:

You can have peace. Or you can have freedom. Don't ever count on having
both at once. - RAH

I recall recently reading about a scam for spyware detection/elimination
software which when the link was clicked, resulted in several actions
occurring (like the CD drawer opening and closing) which were supposed to
confirm the presence of the spyware and the need for the application, which
oh by the way only costs $50+, and is a repackaging of other spyware
elimination products with the real guts stripped out.

If you are not comfortable going into SAFE mode and disabling the various
buggers in the registry, then a full clean install is probably not a bad
idea. Presuming of course that the drawer is not doing it's thing due to a
bad switch, or hardware problem. Eliminate the hardware first!

I do a google search of every file that is listed in the startup and
services folders under MSCONFIG and verify what each one does. Also check
every process listed in the Task Manager the same way. I then go into the
registry and delete the keys associated with the bad guys. Must be very
specific and not take out the wrong items. That is why a complete clean
install is frequently the best option...

Good Luck,

Regards,

Alifea
