Although my CDROM and my DVDRW can be seen during the boot sequence, they
are not visible in My Computer or Explore.

I have 2 H/D. Even if I I swap my IDE cables over, my PC still works but my
CDROM & DVD remain invisible.

Add New Hardware says that they are installed but "there is a problem"

I have no idea how/when this occured - they used to work perfectly.

Can anyone help?

See if the patch in "My CD drives have vanished (from Explorer, Device
Manager, etc.)" in section 8 here http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm helps.
