out of the blue my cdrom stopped working and evidently disappeard from my
computer. Neither my D or E drive show up in "my computer" any longer and
device manager doesnt even list a cd rom drive. I found the following in my
error log but I have no idea what to do. Any help is appreciated.

The device 'SAMSUNG CD-R/RW SW-408B' (IDE\CdRomSAMSUNG_CD-R/RW_SW-4
08B_________________BS02____\5 &14d983e1&0&0.1.0) disappeared from the system
without first being prepared for removal.

Sounds like it's broken to me. It could be an upperfilters or lowerfilters
issue but the symptoms don't look like that's the case. Open the PC, take
the CD ROM out and try it in another PC. If it doesn't work there then it's
broken. It could be all sorts of things but this one leads me to think
hardware - be it cables, IDE card/controller, or even failed power. Does the
tray open or anything? If so then it's probably not power. I'd try a
different PC.

I have a similar problem. A reboot sometimes help. The problem is both CD
and DVD/RW drives do not show. When they do show up and when I load a CD and
try to access the drive it tells me that it is empty. Both drives have
similar problem. In my experience, there is a slim chance that 2 drives will
fail at the same time.

I have XPPro/SP2 and an Intel Pentium 4/ Intel motherboard

In your case I'd try the fix here:

Missing CD/DVD Drives:

Try the automated script from Doug Knox's site first.
