cdrom drive is not accessible Incorrect Function

I have a dell precision 650 running xppro with all the latest patches,
fitted to this are two combo DVD/CD-ROM drives.
Sony DVD RW DRU-500A drive E
NEC DVD+RW ND-2100AD drive F

In an attempt to fix my problem I have done the following:-
I have updated the firmware to both drives.
There are no device conflicts in Device Manager.
I have cleaned both drives and disks before playing.

PROBLEMS DRIVE E
I place a music cd in drive E and under my computer the icon changes,
recognising a disk is inserted. Autoplay doesn't kick in at all and
when I click on the drive I get the following message E:\ is not
accessible Incorrect Function. On going to properties and hardware tab
I can see my two external firewire drives and the two combo drives. I
select the sony combo but the apply button is greyed out. I carried
out the same test with a data disk infact an Adobe GoLive installation
Cd and same problem. I tried another test with a DVD, the icon
recognised it and changed to dvdrom but the same message came up with
no access to the disk.

Now this is where it is weird starting itunes, it recognises the cd
and will play, then I go back to my computer and click on the cd and I
can explore the disk however ejecting the disk and starting over gives
the same problem. Unfortunately the same can not be said for opening
power dvd it gets the same error message E:\ is not accessible
Incorrect Function.

PROBLEM DRIVE F
I place a music cd in drive F and under my computer the icon changes,
recognising a disk is inserted. Autoplay doesn't kick in at all and
when I click on the drive the explore window opens and show the cd as
empty. Properties shows it as capacity, used space and free space as
0bytes. Starting itunes, it recognises the cd and will play, then I go
back to my computer and click on the cd and I can explore the disk
however ejecting the disk and starting over gives the same problem.
Trying to play dvd is same as other drive.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This

So I have found out that An error was detected on device
\Device\CdRom1 during a paging operation.
see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
This gave an explanation An input/output (I/O) request to a
memory-mapped file failed and the operation was retried.

Are you testing each drive with more than one CD as it could simply be
a damaged or dirty CD. Testing with three or four might eliminate this
possibilty. If it is not this then try a CD Drive Cleaner.

The error involving Firefox has not been reported in Google. Check
over a few days and see if it is an isolated or recurring problem.

Hope this helps.

I read through this forum and others for similar problems and used
different
cd's each time to illiminate the dirty scratched dilema. I have
already tried the
cd drive cleanter path to no effect. The problems persist.

Thanks for your input it is much appreciated.

What CD / DVD software are you using?

Are the drives recognised in Windows Explorer?

The drives are seen in explorer.
Everything used to work just fine and now it doesn't. I have not
installed software of late,
and can't see a reason for the issues experienced.

For example putting in an oringinal dvd (film) explorer sees an empty
disk, power dvd cant
see it but windows media player will play it. Having done that then
explorer sees files and
power dvd will play it. Eject the disk and the senario is created again.

Thanks again for your input problem persists.

I used kellys regkey to enable autoplay which didn't fix the problem.

However going to the microsoft article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315350/en-us and from there the roxio
site discussion forum there was a link to a dell patch for my machine
upgrading roxio software.

Roxio came preinstalled on my machine and it has never been used it is
not even available from start all programs.

What the hell it fixed my problem.

Thank you for your input

When was your Dell Precision 650 new?

Easy Creator ( Roxio ) has historically created problems,
notably when Windows XP was first introduced. What
version was it you had and what is it now.

Removing Easy Creator can also create problems as
bits can be left on the computer which cause errors.
