cd

when I put my cd in sometimes it reads it and activates
my son's games etc and sometimes it will wait a long time
and then I get a message Disk not ready or unable to read
disk. And the next time it works okay. What's happening?

I am very new with computers and need help determining my
problem in simple langauge.
