I use to be able to use the XP home edition CD writing wizard. But now it doesn't work. And when I put a DVD into the burner drive my computer kicks it back out, the rom drawer opens with the blank DVD in it and I can't copy nothing onto it. I just want to make backup copies of my stuff. It use to work with DVD's because I have one here that I did a year ago. Is there special software that will make the DVD copy work? I tried nero but the DVD drawer still opens with the black DVD in it. Any suggestions? I tried the windows media player and that doesn't work either.

Try reinstalling the driver maybe?

How do I do it? Don't see nothing here. There use to something in XP to
check that in the Help and Support but it's not here any longer.

I have Nero on my computer. The DVD drawer still opened up after I shut it
with the blank DVD in it. It works if I put in a blank CD-R but a blank
DVD-RW it won't work and the rom drawer opens within a matter of seconds of
me closing it. Not sure why. But it does the same thing with Nero too. It
won't accept the blank DVD-rw disc, it opens up the drawer. Not sure why.
:-( Any other suggestions. I wanted to back up all my info to DVD instead of
CD because I can fit more in a DVD.

Have you got all the patches for NERO?

Try here:

http://www.nero.com/eng/Downloads.html

Also, it looks like the system is not recognising the drive as DVD RW
drive. Have you tried removing from the hardware lists, reboot and see
if it resolves.

To remove from hardware lists, go to MyComputer,
View systems Information
Check the CD/DVD drive
Delete it
Reboot

It should now correct itself if the drive is PnP. You won't need any
drivers if it is recognised correctly.

It sounds like the DVD Laser system in the drive died. This assumes that you
have a DVD player installed, and the Nero software is also properly
installed. The key clue is that the DVD gets rejected by the drive.

I just went thru hell with a brand new Sony 820A DVD/CD burner. when all was
said and done, it worked in PIO mode only in windows XP, and in all rated
modes in Linux on the same pc hardware. Since the drive was hardware
compatable, I assumed that the drive firmware is at fault, and returned it
for a similar Memorex drive. The Memorex worked as Plug & Play devices
should. Interestingly enough the UDMA specs were the same for both, however
the Sony would come up in UDMA 4 if an 80 pin cable was used.
I side issue is that both drives came with Nero 6.6, however the OEM
versions are tied to each vendor. Since I have both Sony and Memorex
burners, (One internal, one USB) this is going to get interesting.
