Windows Explorer has stopped writing files to CD. When I drag a file to the
CD drive, I get the error message "There is no disc in the drive. Please
insert a writable CD into drive E:\.", even though there is a fresh CD in the
drive. How can I fixt this problem, please?

Probably a clean re install of xp, my unit's been doing the same for months,
tried everything except clean install. Anyone else have any ideas???
Where's Ken Blake on this one?

I had a similar problem when I first got my computer a few weeks ago.

Go to Start, All Programs, Administrative Tools, then Services and make sure
that IMAP CD Burning COM Service is set to automatic. Hope this helps.

Right here. Windows has no native ability to write to a CD simply by
dragging files to it. You get such a facility only if you have third-party
packet-writing software, such as Ahead Software's Incd, installed.

Maurice, you say "has stopped writing files to CD." Did it ever work this
way? If it did ,you had such third-pary software installed.

If it used to work, but now doesn't, clearly something is wrong with that
software installation Tell us which product it was. You might want to try
reinstalling it.

What if the IMAPI CD burning service is missing from the Services Window?
How do i replace this???
many thx

That's something I can't answer. My response was just based on something I
personally did. Hopefully an MVP will be able to help. Good luck!

Thanks Petey, Ken and Lizzie.

Petey, maybe I'll have to do what you say.
Lizzie, I did what you did, but, alas, no joy.
Ken, I checked all the CDs supplied with my Dell PC, and among them
is Roxio Easy CD Creator. This application continues to work fine.

Some *parts* of it may work fine, but obviously the DirectCD component does
*not* work fine. See below.

According to "Windows XP Inside Out", Windows Explorer describes its
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service as 'Used by the built-in
CD-burning feature in Windows XP'! (Appendix F: Managing Services,
page 1306 in my book). The use of this built-in CD writing feature is
described on pages 467 etc.
I was able to copy files to CD (by dragging and dropping or right
clicking and sending to CD)since I got my PC over three years ago,

Then you had the packet-writing component of Roxio Easy CD Creator
(DirectCD) (which permits this) installed. As I said, this is *not* a native
feature of Windows XP.

Read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packet_writing

until recently it stopped working.

Then, obviously, DirectCD is either no longer installed or damaged in some
way. Reinstall it.

Thank you so much! With Roxio's Easy CD Creator Basic 5.2 uninstalled
and reinstalled, Windows Explorer drag and drop to CD works fine
again now. And, finally, I understand what you mean by the necessity
for DirectCD (or something else with a packet-writing component) to
be installed and working under the hood, to enable WE drag and drop.
So, thanks also for patiently educating me!

You're welcome. Glad to help.

By the way, it took two attempts to fully install Easy CD. The first
time, the install shield said Easy CD was incompatible with the
current version of XP, but I choose the 'Continue' option anyway. It
appeared to install Easy CD, but then it didn't work with Windows
Explorer. But the second uninstall and reinstall, with the same
warning message and choosing 'Continue' delivered the goods. XP being
fussy?

Sorry, I don't use that particular product, so can't help with the details
of installing it.

Easy CD Creator Basic 5.2 is a very old version. It was bought out by Roxio
and their latest version is called Easy Media Creator version 9. Make sure
you get the update patches for your version if they are still available.

I had version 5.2 as an OEM install when I purchased this computer almost 5
years ago. It never really worked right. Later version 6 and now what I'm
using, 7.5, are much more reliable. I just haven't gotten around to
updating to version 9. One thing though, 5.2 is much smaller than the
current release which seems to be way overkill for most people.
