CD-RW won't read certain discs

Recently my CD-RW drive on my laptop stopped reading discs that were created
on my desktop or other friends PC's. This includes data, photo and music
CD's. It will read pre-recorded DVD's and CD's that I've purchased. Any
suggestions as to what may be causing this problem?

Hello,

Two possibilities, all hardware related

1) CD-RW disc reaching end of life
2) CD-RW drive reaching end of life (laser strength weakening, so it can
still read stamped discs)

Try putting the CD-RW on another drive and check whether you can read data
to rule the first one out.

The 2nd one is harder to diagnose - you can try burning a CD-RW and doing a
Verification test of the data.

Thanks for the response. The cd's do play on my desktop just fine. It's
only on my laptop which is about 3 years old.

Does your laptop have the same software program that was used to create the
CDs? Sometimes if you use some program like InCD to burn CDs another
machine that does not have InCD cannot read the disks, InCD includes a
small program on the CDs so that another machine can read them, but
sometimes if autoplay is turned off, for example, the program does not get
installed and the CDs remain unreadable on another machine.

The cd's that I've tried to play have been generated by a variety of
programs. The one's that I've created were done on Roxio Easy CD creator.
Both my desktop and laptop use Roxio. The drive has not been able to
recognize photo CD's from Costco and music CD's burned from Itunes. It
appears that it can only read stamped CD's.
