CD RW stopped working under Win XP

D

dfrog

Windows XP Home SP2 updated.

Unusual for me but not 'written to CD' for many weeks, and the process now
fails with 'please put a writeable disc into D: (even when a known writeable
CD is in place)
Both my Lite On DVD RW drives work OK with same CDs using Nero or Ashampoo.
Both drives SHW-16H5S & SOHW-1693S are listed on Microsoft HCList and have
worked fine up till now.
IMAPI CD Burning service is set to Automatic and started.
CD drive Properties is showing Recording tab and 'enable CD recording' is
selected.
I notice tho' that on the 'General Tab' in the window for the drive number,
the cursor is flashing but the window is 'greyed out' and I cannot input
anything.
Also, from 'blackviper's site' he gives the default registry settings as >>

quote>>

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ImapiService]
"Type"=dword:00000010
"Start"=dword:00000003
"ErrorControl"=dword:00000001
"ObjectName"="LocalSystem"
"DisplayName"="IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service"
"Description"="Manages CD recording using Image Mastering Applications
Programming Interface (IMAPI). If this service is stopped, this computer
will be unable to record CDs. If this service is disabled, any services that
explicitly depend on it will fail to start."

End Quote>>>

Now mine is identical with the exception that the 'data value' for "Start"
is 00000002 (2) and not 00000003 ( I have not made any changes here)

I have also worked thro' Microsoft KB 316529 and found that proceedure not
to work in my case.

In Event Viewer I get a Warning - Event ID 128 - The device number of a
cdRom cannot be determined. This device failed to configure. This event may
be logged several times etc.

I feel sure the answer is close to me, but I can't see it, and would
appreciate help to find it.

One way to get the message you see is for the laser in the CD drive to be
dirty or broken. In fact, a bad laser is by far the most likely cause.

Take your point on that Jim, BUT, my second paragraph shoots that one down
" Both my Lite On DVD RW drives work OK with same CDs using Nero or
Ashampoo."

If I had a problem laser (on BOTH of my drives at the same time) then surely
I wouldn't be able to burn a CD with Nero / Ashampoo !!

Jim,
I've been searching for my error message linked to 'bad or broken or dirty
laser' but have not found any reference.
Can you refer me to any website that will refer to your suggestion ?
