CD-RW problems

I recently installed a Memorex CD-RW drive to replace the original CDRW that came with my computer. I also have the original DVD drive installed. When I connect the IDE cable to only the CD, XP recognizes it. However, when both the DVD and Cd rives are connected, XP does not read either one. All software has been installed. I've tried the original IDE cable and the new one that came with the CDRW, same problem every time. Can anyone lend a suggestion?

Sounds like maybe both drives are jumpered "master" or
both are jumpered "slave". On the back of each drive near
the IDE interface there should be three sets of 2 vertical
pins. There should also be a legend of some type
indicating MA (master) or SL (slave) or something
similar. Two IDE devices that occupy the same bus must
have different jumper settings to work correctly, one set
to master, the other to slave.

Good Luck !

I ran into something I'd never seen before when helping my brother add a
DVD burner to his system. He has a Dell and we were doing the same thing
you were - adding a second drive on the same controller caused both drives
to go missing. DVD drive, nothing. Go back to using original drive only (a
CD burner), it worked fine.

We could play with the BIOS settings and get the new drive to show
correctly in those screens. However it would go missing in POST and of
course did not show up in Windows either.

Finally noticed a "silent audit mode" option in BIOS. No mention in the
manual or the Dell site (that I could find) about what it did. Toggled it
to the opposite setting. Booted and both drives worked perfectly from there
on in.

Anyhow, the point of telling that little story is that you may need to dig
a little deeper in your system settings to get the drive recognized and
setup.

Also, be sure the jumpers are set correctly, one as master
and one as slave.

Also switching them around on the IDE cable makes a difference and be sure
to switch around the Master and Slaver jumpers when you do.

Well I could do but I doubt thats the problem as it was
working fine a month ago and nothing has changed (well
nothing obvious).

Thanks.
