CD RW not detected at all

I am running windows xp home. cd rw is inaccesible to
explorer, and neither will read a disc. DVD Read only
works fine.
I cannot get my CD-RW drive to burn files any more. All
of a sudden, neither Nero, WIndows media Player nor Roxio
will work. I have tried all kinds of
things from the techservice forums (including restoring
to older date) but to no avail. Any help would be
appreciated.

what is your CD-RW Drive maker and model?
Is that CD-RW Drive internal or external?
which version of Roxio Software do you have?
which version of Nero do you have?
what is all kind of things you did?

Try to remove both software once (Nero and Roxio).
and make sure windows xp recognize CD-RW function with out both software.
If that works fine, install one of them.
I heard problem with InCD and DirectCD (which is two packet write on one system) run on same system.
try to avoid one of them.
(or just use one of them to reduce problem)

Installed SP2 on 9/8 and today is the first time I have
needed my CD drive. CD's with data show up in explorer
with nothing on them. Trying to format CD's with Direct
CD (says that CD is unusable, tried with 5 CD's), same
thing happened with Ahead Nero. Haven't tried using
Windows Media player but I am trying to burn data CD's,
not music.

I am ready to restore back to pre-SP2 if this is not
fixable right away.

Try removing the CD drive from Device Manager. Reboot and let the OS
redetect it. Otherwise, do you have a proprietary driver for it? Try
vendor support for an SP2 update (although that should not be
necessary). Also, check that the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service is
running, and set for Automatic start (this shouldn't be the source,
but...).
