DVD/CD Drives not Writing

I have a Sony DVD-RW and DVD/CD-RW in my PC and niether will write to discs.
Under properties neither show a recording tab. Both read fine. I have tried:
1) re-installing drivers
2) re-installing hardware
3) updating registry editor
4) going through various Windows precedures, still no joy.
