cd RW driver corrupted?

I had a problem with windows XP a couple of weeks ago.
The solution was to to a repair re-install from the xp
disc. While installing it said it couldn't
load "drivers.dll". Now my cd RW/dvd rom isn't working
right. It's unbelievably slow and won't run some
installation programs. It won't burn at all. The drive is
an optorite combo DC4801 from I/O Magic. The driver is
provided by Roxio, file version 5.3.5.10. I no longer use
Roxio or have the disc. There are no other drivers on the
computer. I have tried uninstalling the drive and
reinstalling it, rolling back the driver, (there are no
other drivers to roll back to). I have been trying to
install Nero burning, but the installation program won't
run off the disc and I don't know if there is a new
driver in the program or not. I searched the Microsoft
site but I couldn't find a driver to download. What do I
do now?

Tom,
I have had a similar driver problem which renders my HP
Pavilion 7965 CD-RW and DVD-ROM totally inoperable due
to "CD Recording Software causing instability" error
message. I have gone to mrdriver.com and
driverguide.com, even downloaded the latest driver from
microsoft.com. The driver .exe from MS won't even run -
it gives an error message itself! At this point, I'm so
angry that I'm simply going to exercise my Circuit City 3-
year no-questons-asked warranty and let CC, HP, and MS
fight it out. Good luck, and let me know if you find a
solution.
