I am running windows xp on my gateway and have been having a problem with
my CD RW drive.
I can play an audio CD without any problems but I cannot record to a blank
CD. the drive appears to be full without a disk in it. and when I do insert
a disk into the drive it doesn't recognize the disk and asks me to insert a
blank disk. I have checked the properities of the disk and everything
appears ok. can anyone suggest something that I can try or is it possible
that the drive is bad?

Was Windows XP the original operating system on the computer or did you
install it later? Do you have an CD burning software installed on your
computer regardless of whether or not you are trying to use it for the
purposes described? If you have such software installed, have you checked
the software's website to make sure you have a version compatible with XP
installed on your system, do you have alls such patches and updates for that
software.

Even if you are not using the software, if its installed and is incompatible
with XP it can cause the issue you describe.

If none of the above helps or applies, please take this question to the
windowsxp.hardware newsgroup.
