Blank CD not recognised

Having installed a new Sony AWG 170A DVD/CD drive I found tha Windows XP
would not recognise it as a recordable device. I changed the value data for
the "Drive Type" in the registry to "2" ( CD-RW ) and this produced a
"Recording " tab under CD drive (Properties) in My Computer. When I try to
burn a CD-R or RW disk, I am asked to insert a blank disk even after doing so!
Any suggestions?

Go to Control Panel - Admin Tools - Services
or click Start, Run and type : services.msc

Make sure that IMAPI CD Burning is Started.
If not, double click it, set Startup type to Manual, Apply.Exit and reboot.

Now in My Computer, right-click the drive, Properties, Recording Page and make sure
'Enable recording' is checked

Thanks, but I had already done all that and it still requests a blank disk to
be inserted when one is there already!

Following some advice from another discussion group, I uninstalled the drive
under Device Manager in Control Panel and then restarted the computer. XP
then reinstalled the drivers for the "New Hardware" and this time the drive
started working correctly! Would you drive a car controled by Microsoft
software???
