cd roms

I have a dell deminsion 8400 and I keep getting an error and it says I need
to run my xp cd to fix the problem, but my system does not reconize my cd
roms at all. I contacted dell and they keep telling all this other crap to
do and has nothing to do with my cd rom, I can not seem to get them to
understand, that my system does not reconize my cd roms, please tell me how
to fix this problem
