CD ROM quit working

My CD ROM stopped working and I'm clueless on what has happened. If I
install a CD-RW it will keep the drive door closed and read it. If I install
a music or game cd it starts blinking green for a few seconds and door opens
back up. I've tried shutting down the system with the cd's installed and it
still opens back up after the computer starts up. Any help would be
appreciated.

Assuming this is a desktop PC:

- open up the PC box

- disconnect and reconnect the ribbon and power connectors on the
CD drive.

- disconnect and reconnect the corresponding ribbon connector at
the motherboard socket

- power up and try again

- if it still misbehaves:
- try a different ribbon cable
- try a known working CD drive

- report back here with your findings
