CD-ROM Performance

Whenever I had to install WIN95,98,or ME, the installation
program sensed a CD-ROM drive in my system, but always
assumed the drive was a quad-speed. Until I changed this
entry under the Control Panel, Performance, CD-ROm drive
tab, Advanced options, I wasn't able to read CD's that I
had burned. I discovered a Knowedge Base article under
WIN ME entitled, "CD-ROM Hangs when attemmpting to load
certain programs". This article steered me to the above
system area, and, upon changing the read-ahead setting
to, "NO Read Ahead" (one setting above "Single-Speed")my
CD-ROM could read any CD.
Now, I have had to upgrade to WIN2000, and the same
problem occured. But, I cannot find the place under disk
management to make the above correction. Any ideas will be
greatly appreciated.

No setting like that I know of for Win2000, but perhaps its time to
upgrade the CD-ROM drive?
