cd rom not recognized as a recordable device

I did the recent windows update. Now my cd-rom is now not recognized as a
recordable device. In properities, the drive has no record tab. I checked
regedit (as outlined in the microsft help document) and the drive type has
the value data of 2.

What do I do now?

Thanks!!

CD-rom's are not recordable devices. ROM = read only memory.
Do you mean your cd-r/rw drive? If so, remove it from device manager and
reboot. Xp should reinstall it. If that doesn't help, try the drives website
for a xp driver.

Yes, it is a cd-r/rw drive. I uninstalled the drive from the device manager
and rebooted, but this did not help. Now what should I do?

Find out who makes the drive and goto their website and look for
downloadable drivers for your make and model. Or if the computer is a dell
or something like that, then try the computer manufacturers website for
downloadable drivers for the drive.
BTW - what does device manager call the drive? Have you tried other burning
software, like ezcd creator, to see if the drive is able to record?

The drive is called HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8400B
Yes, it is a Dell. I will check their site.
Yes, I have tried ezcdcreator

Thanks

So it sounds like windows / device manager is seeing it as installed and
working correctly. Just sounds like the windows burning program is having a
prob, so no recording tab. If the drive works fine with ezcd, then just use
that and forget the xp burning as it's inferior to ezcd.

I found new firmware for my drive at the dell site. I installed it. There
is still no record tab on the drive. It still doen't recognize a blank cd.
It does recognize a cd with data on it.

Does ezcd see a blank cd? If so, use that and forget about the built in xp
burning.
If ezcd doesn't work either, maybe dell support has a fix for you.
BTW - excd has to be version 5 with patches or higher.

ezcd does not see a cd. I just reinstalled ezcd (5.2) - no improvement. It
has always worked until I did a recent windows update.

You could try removing the update if you know which one it was or try a
system restore to a time when it was working.
