cd-rom no longer reading??

R

Rudi

Hi,

My system has been working perfectly, until now, I have a normal (old)
Phillips CD-drive and a (old) HP 9900 cd-writer dvd-rom drive.

If I put a normal cd-rom in either of the drives, I can see the autoplay
tries to read the cd (mouse cursor changes).

When I try to access the cd-drive, I get an error message 'Please insert a
disk in drive x:'
When I put the cd in the cr-writer/dvd-rom drive, the icon changes to the
correct type, but any disc I put in always seems to be totally blank.

I have removed the drivers, and rebooted, by which XP just re-adds the
drivers again, but that did not help. In fact I do not think this is a
driver problem, but I suspect my XP has gotten messed-up somehow.

Anyone able to help?

How long ago did this start, and have you tried System Restore to a time
just before this started occurring?

I remember this worked some time ago, since then I have done numerous
updates/installs. So System Restore will not be of any benefit to me.

You could do a system restore just to see if it fixes it. You can always
undo a system restore after all. That may help eliminate a few issues as it
could be one of your updates that caused it.

If you have a desktop, open the unit and check that connectors for the wide
data cable are fully inserted.
As the drives are old, it is possible that the lens are dirty. Try a CD/DVD
cleaner disk {a CD size disk with a brush mounted on it}.
