unable to view cd-rom contents anymore

Hi,

My system has been working perfectly, until now, I have a normal (old)
Phillips CD-drive and a (old) HP 9900 cd-writer dvd-rom drive.

If I put a normal cd-rom in either of the drives, I can see the autoplay
tries to read the cd (mouse cursor changes).

When I try to access the cd-drive, I get an error message 'Please insert a
disk in drive x:'
When I put the cd in the cr-writer/dvd-rom drive, the icon changes to the
correct type, but any disc I put in always seems to be totally blank.

I have removed the drivers, and rebooted, by which XP just re-adds the
drivers again, but that did not help. In fact I do not think this is a
driver problem, but I suspect my XP has gotten messed-up somehow.

Anyone able to help?

Hi,

I'm also facing the same problem. I can tell you that it's
probably not the driver problem. If you check, I think you
can open the files in Roxio Easy CD creator or if it's a
music CD, you can still view the content by going to "Copy
from CD" in Windows Media Player. What seems to be a
problem is that somehow XP does not recognize that the CD
is in, while the other program does. BTW, if you try
accessing the CD via the open command in any program, it
will still give you the no CD message.

Does anyone have any clue? I've tried updating XP (I
didn't want to reinstall it). I've tried installing the SP
packages. Nothing works. I don't want to resort to
reinstalling a fresh OS. Please respond.

I experienced the same problem when I updated to Nero
6.0. Nero support suggests it is a driver problem but I
have been unable to resolve the issue based on the
information they provided.

I'm also having the same problem. I have two drives in
my computer. One is a Toshiba CD/DVD drive and the other
is a Memorex CD Read/Write Drive. I've been using both
of them for quite awhile with no problems. I recently
installed some software that caused page faults in the
system. My page files were set to a custom setting and
my system needs outpaced the custom settings. When my
system crashed, I would lose communication with my CD
drives. After I corrected the page fault problem, I now
always get a blank CD message whenever I put a CD in the
Read/Write drive. When I put a CD in the DVD drive and
try to view the contents, it also shows as blank. When I
take the same CD to my laptop which is also running
Windows XP, I can view the contents with no problem. If
I access the CD on the read/write drive using Nero, I can
see the contents and write to it. It also appears as if
I can write to the drive using the standard XP software,
I just can't see the files using Windows to access the
CD. I also have uninstalled the drive and allowed XP to
reinstall to no avail. If anyone has seen this and has a
solution, pleas post it.
