Cd rom has bad block?

In the event veiwer. I have multiple entries under system. That says "The
device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block"
Ive had problems with my DVD drive and I wonder if this indicates a medium
problem or the drive itself? some dvd movies stop and stutter.
I have win xp home sp2 alienware area 51 notebook. Nec dvd burner.

Since this happens frequently and with different DVD's I'd strongly suspect
that it was the drive itself. Have you tried cleaning it with one of those
disk cleaning things that clean the heads of the disk reader?

Thanks for info, I have not tried to clean the lens yet. Can you recommend a
good one?

Are these DVDs that you have burned?
Could be bad or cheap media.
When is the last time you updated the firmware on the drive?

It seems that the ones that dont work right are ones that my friend burnded.
when I try to watch them they stop and stutter usually towards the end. but
the same movie will play fine on another PC.

Next: I checked with alienware and there is no firmware update for the nec
drive according to them.
