CD ROM/DVD ROM Drives not accessible

I am unable to see CDROM/DVDROM Drives listed on My
Computer. I have a partitioned hard drive with drive
letters C, D, E, F assigned and my 2 ROM drives were G and
H. These are now not visible or accessible via Explorer. I
have not added any software or hardware. I have attempted
to disconnect and reconnect these drives and Windows has
identified them as new hardware but they are still
inaccessible. Any ideas anyone?

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. Go to disk
management and look for your drives there. If they show
up (they should if your system is detecting them) right
click on them and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Assign a drive letter and they will show up in Explorer.

Do they show as present and working at Device Manager? (Control Panel -
System - Hardware - Device Manager)

If not, then this usually indicates that some quasi-driver file
registered for the type in the registry has gone AWOL. Being unable to
load it, the system leaves the devices out. To tidy up, get a registry
patch file, cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract
it, r-click on it and merge it into the registry

You will then need to reinstall any CD burning software that you use,
other than that inbuilt in the system

If they are present in Device Manager, then their letters have got
hidden: Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have
installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP
On its My Computer - Drives page ensure that the letters concerned are
checked to be visible
