CD Rom Drives suddenly stop working

I have two internal cd drives. On top is a DVD Burner and the bottom is a Samsung DVD Player drive. I have been using these drives for about a year without any problems. Then a few days ago they both suddenly stop working.

When I put a CD or DVD in the top DVD burner drive it dosn't autoplay. I go to "My Computer" and double click the CD drive and it shows nothing. I have tried many CD's and I get the same results

Whenever I put a DVD in my bottom Samsung DVD Player it dosn't autoplay either. I then go to My Computer and try to open the CD from there. I get an error "E:\ is not accessible Incorrect Function".

Werid thing is that this happened on the same day the new critical updates came out from Microsoft. I have looked at the hardware mananger and it shows no problems with the drives. I have also tried system restore and it still dosn't help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don't think that any of the MS updates that came out just a few days ago
have anything at all to do with CD Drive operation. I'm betting your floppy
drive also doesn't work. If I am correct then it's probably an infection
I've seen many times before, it's trying to keep you from doing a repair.
The "Incorrect Function" part was a signature symptom of that virus. There
are other ways, but if it's what I think it is (the floppy also doesn't
work) then the easiest solution is to remove the HDD and temporarily make it
a slave in another computer that has up to date antivirus. Please subscribe
to the microsoft.public.security.virus newsgroup for further help regarding
infections (it's pretty active, as you might suppose).

Otherwise, if the floppy does work, then one of your CD drives might have
failed or a flat ribbon cable wire, flexing constantly in the fan airflow
stream, might have an internally broken wire. You can try disconnecting one
at a time (E first), and you could also try another flat ribbon cable.
Notice the red stripe side of the ribbon cable and how it connects to a
device and the motherboard -- be sure not to accidently reverse the polarity
or serious damage might occur (they are usually keyed to prevent this, but
not always!) Try not to touch the bare device connector pins with your
fingers, their associated electronics can easily be damaged by static
electricity.

An older MS update (which came out a long time ago) for HIMAT CD support
might cause problems if you have an older version of 3rd party CD writer
software. You could disable the 3rd party stuff using MSCONFIG and see if
that's what's going on. The usual fix is to update or uninstall the 3rd
party software. But generally the CD drive malfunction associated with this
update is limited in that the drive will work fine for all functions except
for writing, so this is probably not the cause. The "Incorrect Function"
part was usually also a signature symptom of this problem.
