CD ROM Drives Can't Load Driver

W

Wayne Wengert

All of a sudden, both of my CD ROM drives show an error in device manage
(code 39). My drives are Lite-On SOHD-16P9S and Lite-On SOHW-16735. The
drives have been working for over a year? The only recent change has been to
re-load the driver for a RAID 1 controller. The error claims it cannot find
the drivers but if I uninstall and then re-install the devices, the wizard
says that the driver I am using is the most recent? The driver pointed to by
both drives is Cdr4_xp.sys in Windows/system32/drivers.

Any suggestions on how to correct this?

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website

CD-ROM Drive or DVD-ROM Drive Missing After You Install Windows XP

CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP

(It'll fix code 41 errors too as per the contents of the last kb article)

Hi,

I had the same problem, I tried to uninstall Roxio cd creator, and as a
result of doing so I was then unable to access my cd or dvd drive. Each
time I booted the pc I get the dreaded blue screen informing me that
there was a prob with the cdr4_xp.sys

I rebooted in safe mode and renamed the cdr4_sys.exe file (located in
windows>system32>drivers) then rebooted as normal.

Then I did a system restore, if like me you are slightly worried about
trying this this link is great
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322756
download the guided help and it will do all the work for you.

I selected a restore date from last month and bingo it worked...

Thanks to this thread for pointing me in the right direction.

Paul
