Cd-rom driver problem

I have a computer running Windows Xp with a Samsung CD-RW drive and a Lite-on
Cd Drive (both are fairly old). Until 2 days ago everything worked fine. Now
neither drive is working and I have a yellow exclamation mark on both drives
in device manager and get a code 39 error message. I also have a code 39
message on an audio device, and there was one on a pnp emulator device until
I uninstalled it and it hasn't been found again. Windows help tells me it's a
corrupt or missing driver and to uninstall and reinstall. I've done this
several times with no success. I've also tried looking on the net for drivers
but can't find any. I copied all of the files that appear in the driver
details from another computer and replaced them but still no luck.
I tried booting from the cd drive with the installation cd and it works fine
until I tell it to go to the windows installion on C:, then it appears the
computer becomes unable to read from the cd drive and freezes.
Anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

Code 19, or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
[Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter]

2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need
to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

Just a thought;
In hardware devices, remove/uninstall both drives.
Shutdown
Disconnect one drive.
Reboot

Thanks, tried both of those and neither of them worked.

I found an updated driver for the VIA AC97 Audio deive and installed it, but
I still get the same error message on all 3 devices. Since the cd drive works
fine when I boot from it I suspect that some software is "overwriting" the
drivers. Is this possible, and if so is there a virus that could be doing it?
I've run Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware and PC-Cillin,
but I still get a pop-up ad which seems to be a bunch of numbers and letters.

Your now talking about an error on 3 devices?
2*cd + audio?
I dont think you mentioned this before.

The spyware tools you've run will not detect or remove a virus
Go to www.symantec.com and run the on line scan
or McAfees on line scan

Post back *after* youve run the scan
