CD-ROM drive icon gone, door not opening

Dell Dimension XPS T550 running Windows 2000.

There is no longer any icon representing the CD-ROM drive
(R:\).

The computer is still working beyond that. It may be a
power supply unit issue, but I would love to know where I
could find the drivers online for the CD-ROM drive and
download them. That would answer where the problem lies.

I also deleted some old user profiles in C:\Winnt, and I
don't know which happened first.

Any insight would be appreciated,

Thanks, Joe

When you boot your machine, the initial boot display
shows the various drives on most PCs. Press the Pause/Break
key on your keyboard at this stage.

- Can you see your hard disk?
- Can you see the CD ROM?
- What happens when you press the CD eject button at this stage?

Thanks for your time and attention on this. I solved it.
The power supply to the CD-ROM had become unplugged when I
was examining it due to some problems with the fan on the
power supply unit. I am sorry to have troubled you.

I suspected this all along - the actions you described
(deleting user profiles) would not cause the type of
problem you described.
