cd rom drive doesn't work

i recently installed a new hard drive for my computer a western difgital eide
hard drive and now my computer won't play or read cd's. When i put in a cd i
get a cd picture next to the mouse like it is loading but nothing happens. My
computer only shows a cd-rw drive.

Did you install the drive on it's own cable or shared with another drive?
Did you make sure the CS/Master/Slave jumper(s) were set proper?

i installed it as its own drive with its own cable. I didn't set up the
jumpers right...didn't remove the jumper shunt when i was supposed to. So i
went and did that then started the computer up again but my cd rom still
doesn't work.

i also noticed today that when i put in my windows xp cd it works but doesn't
work with any other cd.

Boot to Safe Mode > Device Manager.
Remove any/all devices listed under DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Reboot and Windows will redetect/reinstall the device drivers.
