CD-ROM DISAPPEARED

My CD-ROM drive has disappeared!

It isn't in My Computer or in WIndows Explorer. If I put in a CD, it usually (but not always) recognizes it in Explorer.

The system says it is installed and working; I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver.

What is the mechanism by which Windows recognizes and lists a removable storage device in My Computer (the zip and a drivers are there and the a and cdrom are combined in a single unit).

Tried them both and neither worked.

I don't know for sure but this may have happend at about the time I
installed Palm Pilot software. I have since uninstalled it (I couldn't get
it to sync properly with Outlook). No, I couldn't get back to an earlier
"restore point".

Anyhow, I hate to have to reinstall Windows XP and hope that somebody else
has a software fix for getting the CD-rom back.

Found the problem. For whatever reason, the appropriate drive letter was
unchecked as a drive option. Found it with a little program called tweakui.
