CD-ROM and Floppy Disks not recognized

StephenC

My system no longer recognizes the presence of disks in
the CD-ROM, CD-RW and floppy disk drives, though the
drives are shown as being present in My Computer. In the
first two cases, Windows asks me to insert a disk (even
though one is present). In the latter case, Windows
informs me that the disk is not formatted (even though it
is), and asks me if I would like to format it (which
attempt then fails). I have uninstalled these devices via
Add/Remove Hardware, and let Windows reinstall them on
next boot, and they are reported as functioning normally
by Device Manager and Computer Management. What is going
on here??

Thanks!

I've seen similar behavior when a Hard Drive is on it's way to hard drive heaven

Look in the event log viewer and see if you see any errors related to hardware at all

Start there.

I have the same problem except ALL of my peripherals come
up with the same error (disk not formatted). The
peripherals include the floppy, cd-rw, SmartMedia reader,
and USB hub. Service Pack 4 was reinstalled. No help. I
reinstalled Windows. No help.

My USB scanner works normally.

Everything works when I boot to safe mode!

Here's what I tried: Using the Task Manager, I noted all
applications running while in safe mode and compared this
to all applications running in normal mode. I booted to
normal mode and then then stopped any applications not
included in the Safe mode. No difference.

I am baffled.

Is a post missing from this subject? Someone mentioned
going to the Norton website because a possible solution is
there. Well, it worked for me. My other post under this
topic indicates the symptoms.

The solution is to disable AutoProtect when running Norton
AntiVirus 2004 . Once I did that and rebooted, all of my
peripherals starting working again.
