CD probelm

I can write to a CD-R but I can't read it. It seems to think it is a blank CD.
(I have no problem writing and reading a CD-RW of the same brand.)
When I insert the CD-R disk after writing it, it says it is a blank disk.
If I try to use the command prompt to switch to that drive, it says "the
request is not supported". If I write more data to the disk, it does show
that 119 MB has been used and after writing, that now 238 MB have been used.
If I immediately switch to the command prompt after writing, it is on that
drive, ie D:\> but if I type DIR, I get "the request is not supported" and
switched back to the C drive. I have a couple different CD-R disks my
brother recorded on his machine that I never bothered to look at. One has a
program on it and that is read fine and starts up. The other disk has data
on it, and I get that it is a blank disk. Any ideas what the problem is?

Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider On the
Edit menu, click Permissions . Click the registry key for the user that is
currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control are both set to
Allow . Click the Advanced button, ensure that the user that is currently
logged on is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column,
and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column. Click to
select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown
here that apply to child objects check box. Click Apply , and then click Yes
when you receive a prompt to continue. Click OK , and then click OK again

Ummm . . . Are you suggesting I edit the Registry? As my handle implies, I
am a greenhorn, and there are lots of warnings to not do that unless you
really know what you are doing. Even so, I don't understand how I would
click a registry key, if I were just editing the Registry ???
