CD player not responding when CD inserted

I have had this problem for some time. I boot up W2k Pro. On completetion
of boot I I open either the CD or DVD unit and insert a CD/DVD. I close the
player. Nothing happens most of the time, just occasionally the CD will
start and I can see it in Explorer.

However, if I insert a CD before booting up then the CD is registered every
time.

So to be sure of being able to use a CS I would open the drawer, close it,
re-boot the PC and the CD is OK.

This problem has occured on no less than 3 different PCs, one of which ran
SCSI drives. The problem seems to be associated with W2k.

Has anyone any ideas as to how to progress towards a cure please?

I wonder if your CD Auto Insert Notification may be disabled?
Here is a page for how to disable it, the procedure to re-enable it is
implicitly obvious: http://help.acoustica.com/mp3-cd-burner/2kain1.htm

Many thanks for the info Rich. Unfortunately the item concerned had not been
enabled. I seem to have got somewhere however by using a different IDE
driver and both CD and DVD work most of the time.

Once again many thanks for your trouble.
