CD insert causes system crash regularly

Hi,

My system - running Windows XP Pro, SP2 - has recently started crashing as
soon as I insert any CD. If I insert the CD soon after the system comes
back up, it doesn't crash, but if the system has been running for a few
hours, it will always crash as soon as the computer tries to auto-play the
CD.

I'm wondering if this is due to the application that is trying to run when
the cd is recognized? Anyway to set all auto-insert actions back to the
default? Any other suggestions would be appreciated (besides reloading my
OS).

Thanks.

Actually, this sounds more like your cd-rom drive is failing or perhaps
your computer is overheating. Try opening the computer and running it
open, observing all fans. Put the cd-rom drive in a different machine
or swap it out for another cd drive and see what happens to narrow down
if the problem is with the drive or your computer.
