CD & DVD RW Woes

Pete

I have Sony CRX220E1 CD-RW and a Sony DRU-500A DVD-RW drive
installed in my Windows XP Professional system and they became
almost non-functional after a major Windows Update which included
SP-2 and several critical updates. The symptoms are as follows:

I can read all forms of CDs and DVDs but before the system will even
recognize a newly-inserted CD or DVD, I have to perform the
following sequence:

right-click the drive in the My Computer window, click "Properties"
in the fly-out menu, click the "Hardware" tab in the dialog box,
double-click the appropriate drive in the "All Disk Drives" list in
the dialog box, click the "Volumes" tab in the new dialog box, and
click the "Populate" button.

The drive will then spool up and the volume name will appear in the
dialog box. I can then close all dialog boxes and as long as I leave
the same CD or DVD in the drive, I can access it normally. But if I
change the disk, even for one with like-and-kind data, I have to
repeat the above sequence again before I can access the data.

ALSO:

My system refuses to write to either drive. My Roxio Drag-To-Disk
says "No Recorder" or "There is no disk in the drive" no matter what
kind of media is in either drive. If I try to copy to a blank disk
using the standard Windows XP method I get a "Drive not accessible,
incorrect function" popup.

I should also add that the same symptoms occur with any external
(USB) CD or DVD-RW I try. My system simply refuses to copy data to
any disk.

Let me reiterate that both drives worked perfectly before the
update. I've tried everything I know shy of wiping the slate
completely clean and re-installing everything from scratch to
correct the problem. This includes attempting to roll back the
system to a pre-update state, repeatedly un and re-installing the
CD/DVD devices and drivers, un and re-installing Drag-To-Disk, and
countless other fixes. Every diagnostic routine I've tried says the
devices are working perfectly but that's obviously not the case.

I loathe making updates for this very reason. As often as not, they
create more problems than they fix. I'm getting pretty cranky about
this and I need some help.

Please and thank you!

Pete

PS: I'm using the default Windows drivers for both the CD-RW and
DVD-RW. The Sony website says this is all that's necessary.

maybe you should simply unistall all those cd devices. first remove the
driver if possible. then de energize your pc, unplug, and remove the panel.
Then unplug your cd devices. afterwards, boot up your machine, double check
no cd devices appear and there is not software installed for them. cycle
your pc and windows a couple of time to ensure that it works fine without the
cd equip. When you are satisified, unplug your pc, and plug in one of the cd
devices only. boot up to windows and see if windows adds the new hardware
automatically. if so, then xplore, format, copy data to and from the cd
devices. if windows doesnt recognize the device, begin the manual process of
installing the device. first, check your cmos/bios to ensure your cd device
is being recognized. you do this by pressing f2 as you power on the computer.
afterwards, reboot to windows and either use your driver cd or go to sony
site, download any drivers, etc.... ensure that windows runs smoothly with
the one cd device. If so, create a restore point. afterwards repeat the
process above for the next cd device and so fourth for each subsequent
device.

Fixed problem. Had software called InCD causing conflict with windows update.
Deleted program and everything is up and running as normal. Apparently CD
creating software causes conflict. Sorry dont know what other specific
programs cause conflict or what update it conflicts with. good luck.
