CD / DVD Rom drives have disappeared

I know some people on here know what they are doing with a PC. Unfortunately
I'm not that good with them and need some help solving a problem.

I bought an iPod Nano today. I installed iTunes using the installation CD
you get and everything seemed fine until I put a music CD in the drive to
copy it onto the iPod. It said that it didn't recognise the CD and that I
should remove and reinstall the iPod and iTunes. I did that and it still
didn't work.

I then tried putting a CD in just to listen to it to make sure the drive was
working. But again the drive didn't run the CD which it
did do right up until last night. According to the device status the DVD
CD- Rom Drives :

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot
find the hardare device (Code 41)

The CD / DVD Drive icon doesn't even appear on the "My Computer" page . No
one else uses this PC and I haven't messed about with the settings. In fact I
was playing a game on it last night and it worked fine.

....I'm wondering if you've installed mal/spyware along with your i-pod
"iTunes" application !?!

....I've just, (with ENORmous help from David H Lipman), rid a friends PC of
the "NewsDotNet" adware package, that possibly was carried by the
Trojan.Zlob.D virus which somehow resulted in "SpyAxe," ( being installed
into his PC - possibly his children did it !! ). ...and it seems to me that
it all started when his kids downloaded and installed iTunes !!!!

Typically, this is the result of an incompatibility with recent versions of
iTunes and an older version of Roxio/EZCDCreator.

I suggest making a system restore point first. Then ...

If you have EZ CD Creator version 5, the best solution is to upgrade to a more
recent version.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling your burning app, or see "CD-ROM access is
missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41
after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us

If you have an old Roxio CD buring app installed, and make the registry changes
suggested in the KB article, you may find that the app no longer works. You can
either reinstall it or go to roxio support and search for articles EEZ000005 and
EE6000150. The former has a link to a registry patch that will restore the
proper upperfilters and lowerfilters values for CDCreator 5. Other info on the
Roxio site may help with more recent versions.

....correction, I gat that quite a bit wrong, as someone on another thread
pointed out - the troajn probably was carried in along with SpyAxe crapware.
