HELP! My internal CD/DVD Player/Burner does not perform. I have tried
everything from reinstalling XP after formatting the harddisk.I have now even
bought a brand-new DVD drive (Sony Dual Layer DVD+/-) and I still have the
same problem. The drive sometimes does read the content on the DVD/CD (with 2
- 5 min delay) but I cannot use it to install software or run any
applications, most of the time its sits there and does not do anything...

This is drive is separtely to my 2nd on-board IDE controller and no
mulfunctions are being reported in the hardware profile. I have set the drive
hardware-wise as a master, as this was the only setting under which the
system recognised both drives.

All this time I had used an external DVD +/- reader/writer from Freecom
connected via USB2 and it has no such issues.

Further I get the following error most of the times:" E:\is not valid Win32
application" (e: being the the DVD drive that gives me the headache).

Hi Chimera,

Try this ,as this I know can be very exasperating!
First go to control panel ,push performance and maintenance, then
administrative tools, go to services and then go down the list until you see
your DVD/CD and see if the services for these is turned on. If not right
click and on the top hit start. Go down to volume shadow copy since this is a
quasi backup procedure and make sure that is started also.

Ok next thing you can do is go to my computer and right click on your CD/DVD
drive and choose properties. See if your Recording area is activated , in
otherwords checked. You can peruse the other tabs to see if they look right
to you. But don't change anything unless you know what you are doing.

Next go to start and hit all programs, then accessories and after you can
go to system tools, then choose system information. Put your CD-R in the
player and hit refresh after it loads which is under the view menu. Then
choose components and look for your CD/DVD. Look at the information and see
what it says about your device.

Next if you find you can't turn it on fully go back to services and under
your CD/DVD left click the gear side like you did with the other except that
was right click and all the technical information will come up about your
player.

Disregard the errors that come up as a lot of times they can be misleading
and ambiguous. As it can have to do with other things with your system.

Next you have to tell me what program you are using for your CD/DVD drive to
get additonal help so I can give you correct guidance if you are still having
problems.
Nero, Roxio, etc.

Hope this raises your awareness of what is happening.

Incidentally if it does work keep an eye on the services and the properties
section on my computer to make sure recording is enabled as spyware or
malware and even trojans can play with your head so be on all your p's and
q's at all times.

Hi Alan, thank you for your efforts:

I tried what you suggested:

I changed the following 2 parameters under 'Administrative Tools'/'Services':

-IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service from Manual to Automatic (Start)
-Removable Storage from Manual to Autmatic (Start)

This is the closest thing I could find to CD/DVD Drives. But it did not
resolve the problem. I am not sure I have used the right parameters under
'services', there are no paramaters for CD/DVD drives as such...

I can access CD's DVD's and open the first directory but then the frame
freezes. The light on the drive does not come one for a long time (and the CD
does not rotate either and I finally the system tells me that the 'programm
is not responding').

What say u?

Thanks

Chimera

....and I am using Roxio and increasingly Nero 6.3.1.0 but only on my external
dvd drive since the internal does not work....
