Mike

I'd like to set up a profile on my XP Box, dedicated to DVD Burning.
Ideally, when logging in as "DVDBurn", I'd like the system to load my
DVD software (Nero) as the system shell, and nothing else, so I'm
dedicating the maximum system resources to the transcoding and burning.
How can I set this up?

Thanks!

Nero is not going to run any quicker than
it is designed or capable of. Your idea is
not viable.

All due respect Carey, but I know that one can change the windows shell
somewhere.... perhaps a registry entry, perhaps a GPO, however, I know
it can be done. I do know, when I go through the trouble of stopping
services not needed for transcoding the videos, and buring (e.g., third
party, printing, internet related, etc.) it frees up CPU cycles and
memory resources. With those available, transcoding does go quicker...
also, I've had less buring errors when I've stopped the extra services.

So, Now, I'm taking a lot of time shutting down services and killing
unnecessary processes before burning. This helps quite a bit, but I
wanted to create a profile to save me this time.... also, I would like
to at least try changing the windows shell to Nero, to see if that
improves things more.

This can be done, I'm just not sure where.

Thanks again!

I think I've figured it out:

I created a new local user account on the XP Box, logged on with that
account
Launched regedit
went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Created a String Value, called "Shell"
then set Shell = c:\.....\nero.exe

When I logon to that account it launches Nero, and appears to launch
nothing else. I'm going to experiment with disabling services that I
don't need. Not sure, yet, if disabling those services will affect
only that account... I'll see.

Thanks!

If you are actually having a problem with speed, I would simply put a
new 478 motherboard and processor in your system. They are quite
inexpensive now. I just got through installing a new Pentium 2.4 GHz
processor in my computer. Using a Plextor 16X DVD burner, it burns very
fast with a lot of processing power to spare.
