CD Drives not recognised any more

Windows XP

I have two CD Drives one is a CDW, these have also worked and well.

The other day I switched the PC on as usual but the CDs where not visible in
the explorer window, so I check in the device manager and the two cds where
there, but had a yellow exclamation mark next two them.

The message was" Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this
hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)" I have checked the
IDE leads and the BIOS and all seems OK.

Is there anything else I can check or do?

Thanks

Paul

Try replacing the cable, check the power connections, check jumper settings.
try disconnecting one of the cdroms.

Does it get detected in the bios when the computer starts up? If not it's
definately a hardware problem, if it does it's a problem with windows.

Grant,
Yes, they do get detected in the bios when the computer starts up, so I take
it from that, that the leads and switches are OK.

In that case, try deleting the drives from device manager, rebooting and letting
windows reinstall them.

Grant,
I have un-installed the drivers and deleted them from the systems32
directory. scan for new hardware the drivers are recognised, but still get a
message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver
may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Paul.

In that case, try doing a repair install of windows, which should overwrite all
the driver files, hopefully including the one that is corrupted or missing. It
won't uninstall any of your programs or anything, so the system should still
work fine after doing the repair install.

Try running SFC (System File Checker).

How many drives/partitions do you have in total?...and what are the
drive letters for each?

Have a nice one...
