cd drives disappeared

i bought a tdk cd-rw drive bundled with nero 5.5 software. ever since i upgraded the s/w from their website, i've had nothing but trouble. so i decided to get rid of it

since i un-installed Nero, my cd-rom and the cd-rw drive disappeared! i go to Dev Manager, right click on either drive, sel Properties and under Device Status it says "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

i have tried uninstalling both drives and then running Add Hardware wizard. it tries to install, but says there was a problem installing. if i go back to Dev Mgr, i get the same msg as above.

i've tried Update Driver from the Dev Mgr screen

and i've tried completely disconnecting the drives (interface cable and power) from the computer

i'm running windows xp home

any ideas?

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website

(It'll fix code 41 errors too as per the contents of the last kb article)

Hi
I just had a problem I could not solve on my own.
I asked for support from Microsoft and within less then 24 hours they e-mailed a procedure whic
solved my problem (XP was not recognizing my cd writer)
To get the support go to START>CONTROL PANEL>HELP AND SUPPORT CENTRE
GET SUPPORT>GET HELP FROM MICROSOF
You will have to get .net passport to get this help. Prompts will direct you
Best of luck, Ada

I found this procedure in one of the answers to a question
What to do if CD Writer is not recognized by Windows XP

When you loaded XP, Easy CD Creator (or likeness) was on
the system
The BIOS sees the drive fine
It is not present in device manager
If you load a new driver, you cannot
If you load new software, no difference
Yes to these means Filters
First, uninstall any burning software on the system
Reboot as required

Go to star
ru
type regedit, then OK, to open the registry edito

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHIN
Expand SYSTE
Expand CurrentControlSe
Expand Contro
Expand Clas
Find and highlight: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318
Right click on it, go to export
Save it on the desktop, with back as the file name (in
case this does not work
Save it
With the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}key still
blue on the left, look on the right for an entry for
Upper Filter
Delete the Upper Filter
Look for Lower Filters as well
Delete that too
Close the Registry Editor, and restart the machine
See if Explorer finds your drives
