My computer will not recognize blank CD's. If I try to write files to a disc
or burn a disc, it says there isn't one in there even though a brand new disc
is in there. Any suggestions?

The drive does recognize and read discs with with stuff already on them, such
as a game or audio disc, only does not recognize blank discs.

Exactly how are you trying to write files to it? If you're trying to do it
the same way as you do to a hard drive of a floppy, you can *not* do this
without special software. Windows XP's built-in CD-burning capability
requires that you run the CD-burning program.

I use Windows Media Player to burn CD's, which doesn't happen because the cd
is not recognized. I thought at first maybe it was Media Player but I tried
to put data on the disc using the wizard and it said to insert a disc when
there was a brand new one already in the cd drive.

Robin you need to post some more info eg:

Do you actually have a rewriteable CD drive installed?

Have you successfully ever burned a CD disk using this drive and software
before? If you have, Rock gave you some good info to follow.

Hope this helps

Yes I've burned a cd with this computer before. And yes I have a rewriteable
cd drive. and no rocks advice did not help.

Sounds like the Optical drive is not refreshing to detect the Blank disk is
in the drive. Using Windows Explorer, Right Click the Optical and take
the Properties option. When the details box opens do you see a TAB
Recording ? If not, then see the following KB article:

Do this as a test, insert a Blank optical disk in the drive. Reboot the PC
and then retry a burning operation.
