Have you checked Device Manager? Your CD-ROM drive should be listed there without the yellow blobs.

George, I have 10 hours invested. I have been able to
utilize the cd drive from boot up with F8 key. I have run
win 2000 repair 2x. Here's my take so far. it's either
the motherboard controller OR the win 2000. I am going to
purchase and load Win XP professional tonight. I have not
updated my bios yet, but the ASUS system is 4 months old.
The device manager reads as it should. everything looks
great, ie., this device is working properly, etc, etc.
UNTIL i right click a device to explore and then get the
message. It could be a virus, but since this is the main
computer out of a network of five, I'm on automatic
updates with Norton and full scans every week. We block
internet traffic at night. What is really unsettling is
Tammy's Post. Could it be a microsoft update gone
faulty? We have downloaded all updates as of this last
week. I wish i had loaded Norton Utilities. HELP!

It could be an update from Microsoft if you chose to update with one of their driver updates. NEVER do that from Microsoft. Windows 2000 has a bug with those. There have been many Hotfixes to this issue.

So it shows in Device Manager the CD-ROM with the Name of the compnay that made the CD-ROM and all is fine. Hmmmmm.... Try a hardware rescan.

So when you put the Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the drive during boot up the drive is recognized and you get the message to do something to boot from the CD-ROM? Don't do that just go into the op sys. At that point the drive is no longer recognized?

You can also with a CD-ROM in the drive use Drive Management and set it to a different letter. Try D.

Under some circumstances, it is possible to get this message with an
improperly recorded CD. A failed "burn" can do this.

Also, make sure that no CD burner software is active when you try and read a
CD on the drive.
