CD Burners: faster burn speed increase mtbf ?

I heard on radio that the lifespan of a CD burner was related to how much
time the laser was actually burning a CD, so if you burnt at x52 speed the
laser would last longer vs burning at x8 or x16.

Burning at x52 speed laser will be used for a lot less time for each CD
burnt so last longer ?

I would think that the laser is 'on' only when it needs to burn a
hole in the media for a bit. Therefore, how much the laser is 'on'
is data dependent and not writing speed dependent.
