CD burner sometimes not recognized by XP

Once in a while my burner is not recognized by XP. I turn
on puter & red "Burning" light remains lit, will not
eject or show up in My computer or device manager. Then a
day or 2 or 3 or almost a week passes, then it works
flawlessly....Any suggestions? Thank you

Check cabling and power.
