CD Burner Lost Icons

D

Dick Sutton

I am running Windows XP Home SP2 and all latest patches except IE7. I used
to be able to put a blank cdr in my drive and the icon in My Computer would
change to a CDR icon when it recognized the blank cd. That was a couple of
weeks ago.

I just noticed that when I now put in a blank cdr disk that nothing happens
(icon wise, that is). I can still burn a cd but the volume label never
appears when I put it back in. In addition, the stats always says
Free Space: 702MB
Total Size: 702MB

Is there a way to 'refresh' my CD burner code?

Can someone point me to a site that has fixes for these sorts of things?

Thanks...

Dick

Hi Dick

Open Regedit and navigate to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDrom

In the right-hand pane look for the value AutoRun and make sure it is
set to 1. If not, change, close Regedit and reboot.

Hope this helps :) Let us know how you get on.

Nightowl,

You hit the nail on the head! That solved all the mentioned problems.
Thank you very much. That problem wasn't a show-stopper but it was
annoying. Again, thanks for such a succinct answer to my problem.

That's great, Dick, glad you've got it working now. I've seen various
websites recommend setting AutoRun to 0 as a way of disabling autoplay
for all disk types, but it's really not a good idea. If you turn off
AutoRun, Windows is no longer notified when you change disks in the
drive, causing the problem you had. It's better to leave AutoRun on and
if you don't want autoplay, change the settings through the drive's
properties in My Computer.

Nightowl,

I had never heard of that Autorun key that you provided. Some program that
I loaded must have reset it, because I sure didn't. In any event, I'm glad
my system is back to normal.
