CD and DVD player problem (Code 41)

My Compaq R3000 cannot find and CD/DVD players/burners. Neither my internal
or my external drive will show up under my computer. If I go into the device
manager and uninstall them and reboot, the drivers will reinstall, then I
will get a message saying that they could not install correctly. In the
device manager under properties for both devices, it states under device
status that "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware
but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)" I do not know how long I
have had this problem, it could be up to a week. Is there anything I can do,
or will System Restore even fix the problem? Thank you.

I had tried every solution recommend on here in the past month. I should
have looked 2 days farther. I tried the solution that Rick "Nutcase" Rogers
suggested of updating the registry. Problem solved.

Have you up dated your XP software ?? this has been causing fits for lots of
people.
