I want to apply a category to multiple contacts. How do I do this task?

Set the Contacts folder to the By Category or Phone List view so that you
have a table. Group by Category. Drag people (left mouse button) from
"none" to the Category you want them in. You can select many at once and
drag them.

You will have to manually put 1 person in each Category for each Category to
show up in this view.

You can also CRTL Click a lot of people, them Right Click and set their
Category at once.
